11/6/2022 0 Comments Spiderman 2 web swingingI’ve spent hours just soaring around the skyscrapers of New York City, testing the momentum of my swings to find just the right point to gain an extra boost of speed, or leaping off the Avengers Tower to test how close to the ground I could fall, just to swing out in the nick of time. And man does it feel good to find the right mix of jumping, crawling, web zipping, and wall running. There’s a small learning curve, but after getting comfortable with the basics, it’s nearly effortless to make Spider-Man look graceful in every swing, leap, and lunge. Swinging around feels, quite simply, spectacular. You spend a lot of time swinging through the city, and it never gets old. The animations blend well together to make Spider-Man look acrobatic and agile. You can also dive while in midair, giving you a big speed boost for your next swing. You can also swing up against walls, automatically making you run along them as long as you keep that R2 button held down. You can jump out of a swing for extra height and then press the X button to shot out a new web and use it to yank yourself forward. You then release the button when you want to stop swinging.īut you can do so much more than just press the same button again and again. You can latch onto any building, tree, or pole, so you’ll almost always have something to web onto (you’ll only be out of luck if you swing higher than the nearby buildings or go over open water). Swinging is easy, as you just push the R2 button to latch onto nearby grapple points. Using webs to swing around the city is the main Spider-Man fantasy, and this game does a fantastic job capturing it. In fact, the greatest success of the movement system is that, when presented with an easy fast travel system, I, in all cases but the one time they make you use it, chose to swing to my destination. It’s an easy enough system to get into, but it’s not until a couple of hours into playing with it that the true beauty of the system really starts to shine. Not quite within range of another building to swing from? Spidey can also web zip, which simply grabs on to the closest target, quickly allowing you to adjust and hold on to any momentum you may have built up, or he can essentially double zip to an aimed location, choosing to either stay put as Spidey will auto perch at the location selected, or explode off the point forward, either right into another swing or another aimed pull. Should you run into a building while swinging, Spider-Man effortlessly shifts to a wall run, which itself can either continue around the buildings or explode into a launch when he hits roof level. It nails the swing, capturing the general movement while placing you in control of just how fast you want to go. Marvel’s Spider-Man brings down the king, ending its reign while declaring itself the king of swing. There was nothing that quite compared to the physicality of its movement, and most of that was a result of forcing the webbing to attach to a building rather than the sky, as well a generally nailing the feeling of speed and momentum that movement brings with it. As a general aside, no game has gotten Spider-Man’s web swinging right since 2004’s Spider-Man 2.
